Yves Muller studied chemistry at Albert-Ludwig-University in Freiburg, Germany. He received his Ph. D. from the same university in 1993 for his work with Prof. Georg Schulz on the crystal structure elucidation of the thiamine pyrophosphate-dependent enzyme pyruvate oxidase. He then moved to Genentech Inc. in San Francisco as a postdoctoral fellow where he was involved in structural studies on proteins with biomedical relevance such as human tissue factor and human vascular endothelial growth factor. In 1996 he joined the group of Prof. Udo Heinemann at Max Delbrück Centre, Berlin, as a research assistant and was able to establish an independent research program. After having obtained his habilitation in Biochemistry at Free University Berlin he was appointed as a reader in 2001 at University of Sussex in Brighton, UK, before becoming a full professor at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2003.
